Clyburn Statement on CDC’s Updated Mask Guidance

Jul 27, 2021
Press Release
Washington, D.C. (July 27, 2021)Rep. James E. Clyburn, Chairman of the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis, released the following statement on updated mask guidance issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) today:
“Since the Select Subcommittee was established, we have been urging public health authorities to follow the science in our response to the coronavirus pandemic.  I commend the CDC for doing just that in updating their guidance on mask wearing in order to curb the highly infectious Delta variant, which has been spreading rapidly and causing high levels of serious disease and death among unvaccinated Americans.  I look forward to hearing more about this updated guidance from CDC Director Rochelle Walensky and Dr. Anthony Fauci at a briefing for Select Subcommittee Members this Thursday.
“Today’s announcement underscores the fact that we already have the tools needed to protect Americans against this deadly virus: safe and effective vaccines.  We must double down in our collective efforts to get more Americans vaccinated—to protect themselves, their families, and their communities.  I urge all Americans 12 years of age and older who remain unvaccinated to get their vaccinations immediately.  Expeditiously reaching near-universal vaccination will significantly reduce the threat of the virus and will enable the CDC to revisit today’s guidance.  Until that happens, I urge all Americans to follow these science-based recommendations.”
