Press Release

Washington, D.C. (January 14, 2021) — Today, Rep. James E. Clyburn, Chairman of the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis, issued the following statement praising President-elect Biden’s announcement of the American Rescue Plan, a $1.9 trillion emergency relief package that will help contain the coronavirus through a national vaccination program and other public health measures, provide economic relief to families, and support struggling communities:

“Today’s announcement makes clear that the incoming Biden Administration intends to take critical steps to bring the country out of the health and economic crises that we have faced for the past 10 months.  I applaud President-elect Biden’s decision to prioritize public health and economic relief for Americans who are struggling the most as a result of this ongoing crisis.”

I am pleased that President-elect Biden is planning a strong national approach to ending the coronavirus pandemic by mounting a nationwide vaccination program, expanding testing and tracing, ending supply shortages, and protecting vulnerable communities.  The Trump Administration abdicated its responsibility to protect Americans during this pandemic, forcing states and cities to scramble to devise their own plans and scrape together resources without adequate guidance or coordination.  The American Rescue Plan makes clear that the Biden-Harris Administration will save lives by ending these failed policies.”

“President-elect Biden has also laid out a robust plan to provide much-needed economic relief to families and communities that have been hit hardest.  The Select Subcommittee’s work has demonstrated the severity of the need.  Families are struggling to afford rent, mortgages, food, health care, and child care; school districts are struggling to reopen safely; and state and local governments are struggling to keep essential service providers on payroll.  The American Rescue Plan will meet these pressing needs and lay the groundwork for a strong recovery.”

“I look forward to working with the Biden-Harris Administration to enact the American Rescue Plan into law and to ensure that it is implemented effectively, efficiently, and equitably.”
